Frequently Asked Questions

I've never played any instrument before.  Can I REALLY learn to play?
  • Yes, you are never too old to learn a new skill ...... if you are willing to put in practice time. Beginners should plan on practicing 20 to 30 mins. a day.
I haven't played since I graduated, but I was pretty good. What band will I be in?
  • We'd like to start you in the Beginning Band.  It is pretty easy to hear if you should be in the Concert Band and we'll move you right away.
What will we need to get started in the band?
  • You will need an instrument that is in good working order, a music stand, supplies that your instrument requires, and Accent on Achievement Book 1 for your instrument.
I have an instrument that needs repair. Who do you trust?
  • Our director trusts Mike Pilant, at Absolute Music, to repair his personal instruments.
I have seen really cheap instruments on Ebay, are they any good? What about pawn shops?
  • Instruments are like everything else, "you get what you pay for," and "buyer beware."  The pawn shops in Reno are pretty savvy.  They have used (often abused) instruments and try to get as much as they can out of their customers. A $200 clarinet that needs $350 in repairs is not a bargain. Before you buy anything check with our director. jmueller54@clearwire.net
What instruments do you teach?
  • All of the standard band instruments: Flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba and drums.
Is there a fee for the band?
  • $10 for each rehearsal, payable at the start of each 13 week trimester, for a total of $130.
Times are tough and I may not have the full $130 at the start of the trimester?
  • Bring your situation to the attention of the board.  We will work with you to make sure that you will be able to be in our bands.
Is there a trial period?
  • Yes, you have the first 3 weeks of a trimester to decide if we are a fit for you.
